Since 1990, Dutch artist Theo Jansen has been bringing his vision of kinetic sculptures to life with his mesmerizing Strandbeests (Dutch for “beach animals”). These wind-powered creations roam the beaches of the Netherlands, crafted from lightweight electrical tubing and bound with zip ties. Watch them in this video from Your Future Machine.
Their movement is driven by an intricate rotating spine mechanism, allowing them to walk forward and backward. Some Strandbeests are even equipped with sensors to detect and avoid water. Jansen envisions a future where these creatures roam in herds, evolving to survive the elements independently.
“Over time, these skeletons have become increasingly better at surviving the elements… eventually, I want to put these animals out in herds on the beaches, so they will live their own lives,” Jansen said.
