Toyota announced a new UK production line to help it cope with demand for the GR Corolla, but the move could have another positive impact for buyers outside the United States. The automaker doesn’t currently offer the GR Corolla in the UK, but the decision to kick up a new production line there could mean a right-hand drive car for the country is in the works.
Toyota Europe COO Matt Harrison told Auto Express that, “We have a philosophy that you build where you sell, so to build in Europe and not sell in Europe would be counter to that. The gap between supply and demand is now, so it’s about how quickly we can get it. We need to act fast.”
UK car buyers get the Toyota GR Yaris, which is smaller and far less practical but uses the same trick powertrain and all-wheel drive system. Americans don’t get that car and are unlikely to ever see it, even if the Corolla starts selling across the pond. Of course, this move will also likely help Toyota sidestep some of the worst impacts from recent tariff actions, but it’s encouraging to see such a significant decision about a relatively low-volume sports car, which shows that the automaker is serious about continuing production for the foreseeable future.
